Before entering, use a pump-type 4-in-1 (or more) gas detector to check oxygen, combustible gas, hydrogen sulfide, and carbon monoxide concentrations. Only enter if readings are acceptable, and continue monitoring throughout the operation. The detector must be calibrated regularly (follow the manual and local requirements).
If the environment is unknown or confirmed to be toxic or oxygen-deficient, choose a positive-pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) or supplied-air respirator. If only oxygen deficiency is confirmed with no other hazards, a compliant air supply solution can be used. When in doubt, choose a higher level of protection.
A rescue tripod with a winch, safety rope, and harness provides lifting and fall protection for personnel in confined spaces, making it the standard setup for shafts, pits, and tanks. An attendant must be present and ready to use the tripod for lifting at all times.
